Billie Hughes
Recording artist and Emmy-nominated songwriter Billie Hughes died July 3 of a heart attack in Los Angeles. He was 50.
Hughes started as the leader of the group Lazarus. The group recorded several albums, two of which were produced by Phil Ramone and Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul & Mary fame.
In 1978, Hughes embarked on a solo career. His single “Martin Eden” reached Top 5 charts throughout Europe.
Forming a partnership with Roxanne Seeman in 1983, Hughes turned to songwriting, recording and producing for film, television and records. His 1991 album, “Welcome to the Edge,” remained on the Top 10 Billboard chart for four months. The single “Welcome to the Edge” received an Emmy nomination for original song for the daytime TV drama “Santa Barbara” and earned Hughes the International Single of the Year honor at the 1992 Japanese Grand Prix Awards. Hughes garnered a second Emmy nomination for a song featured in daytime’s “Another World.”

He was an active member of many organizations, including SAG, AFTRA, AFM and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Hughes is survived by his parents, two daughters and two grandchildren.
